Patients 'left on soiled sheets' in Queen's Hospital A&E corridors, report finds
Briefly

Healthwatch Havering published a report reviewing A&E services at Romford hospital. The analysis includes Enter and View visits conducted between December 2023 and November 2024. Patient surveys indicated feelings of being overlooked and distress. Case studies from two former NHS workers highlighted extreme neglect during their A&E experiences. One patient, with severe symptoms, reported lying on unsanitary bedding and not receiving personal care. Another patient described long waits for wound inspection and inadequate follow-up communication with their GP regarding their treatment, illustrating systemic issues in the hospital's A&E services.
One patient - who spent hours in a bed in the corridor with "heavy rectal bleeding" - realised they had been lying on a sheet which was "stained with the previous patient's body fluid or sick" - giving off a "horrible musty smell". They said in the report: "As to personal care, during my stay, no one asked if I was in pain or if I was still bleeding and I never saw anyone else getting personal care. Most patients were still wearing the clothes they were wearing on admission. Everyone involved with Queen's knows it is happening."
The other patient, who was admitted with a head injury after a fall, said their wound was "not inspected for several hours" and that details of their CT scan and stitches were not passed onto their GP after discharge. They said: "My GP advised me to return to A&E if I became unwell but no way would I return to such an overcrowded situation."
