"For years, Los Altos resident Kim Wilford watched Alzheimer's Disease rob her beloved mother-in-law of her memories, spirit and finally, her life."
"From Nov. 24 to Dec. 3, Wilford and fellow members of the Los Altos Running group took part in the Alzheimer's Association's Miles That Matter challenge, which asks supporters to walk a mile each day for 10 days to raise funds for research."
"'There are so many of us with family members and friends who have been impacted by Alzheimer's or another form of dementia,' said Wilford, 57, who works as the chief legal officer at GoFundMe. 'I thought this challenge would be a great way to rally everybody together during the holidays.'"
Kim Wilford organized a collective running challenge to honor her late mother-in-law, Ruth Wilford, and to raise money for Alzheimer's research. From Nov. 24 to Dec. 3, members of the Los Altos Running group aimed to exceed the Alzheimer's Association's Miles That Matter 10-day, one-mile-per-day challenge by running a combined 1,000 miles. Nearly 25 group members participated. A GoFundMe page linked to the Strava fitness-tracking app allowed teammates to log miles and collect donations. The group was well on its way to surpassing the goal by Nov. 29. Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease and the most common cause of dementia, affecting more than 7 million Americans, including 720,000 in California. Ruth died this past summer at age 93 after years of memory loss and decline.
