Inquest to probe hospital as SECOND patient dies with broken neck

Vaky Varnava, 61, of Walthamstow, died on June 11 at Leytonstone hospital after a series of falls and complications. He initially fell in the community before suffering a second fall at Whipps Cross Hospital's A&E, resulting in a broken neck. Following surgery, he developed a post-operative ileus, leading to a catastrophic bowel obstruction. The coroner opened an inquest to investigate the care provided, as well as the circumstances surrounding his falls, which contributed to his death. Family members and NHS trust representatives were granted legal status for the investigation.
An inquest was opened into the death of Vaky Varnava, who died after suffering a broken neck from a fall while in A&E.
His cause of death was determined to be a catastrophic bowel obstruction caused by post-operative ileus and a neck fracture, against a backdrop of other health issues.
The coroner highlighted the need to investigate the standard of care provided to Mr. Varnava that allowed him to sustain a further fall.
Legal representatives and access to evidence were granted to Mr. Varnava's family and the NHS trust, as they were deemed interested persons.
