"Cutting funding risks the deadliest resurgence we've ever seen."
"African countries are stepping up to the plate, and we are appealing to the rest of the world to accompany us on this journey, because all of us need to be part of the end story of malaria."
"If funding was 20% lower than in the last round, researchers said there would be an additional 33 million cases and 82,000 deaths, and $5.14bn (3.83bn) in lost GDP by 2030, according to the report."
Slashed contributions from wealthy countries to the Global Fund risk a major malaria resurgence driven by extreme weather, humanitarian crises and growing resistance to insecticides and drugs. Reduced financing would weaken delivery of mosquito nets, preventive drugs and other core malaria controls that rely on the fund, which provides nearly 60% of international malaria financing. A 20% funding reduction could produce roughly 33 million additional cases, 82,000 extra deaths and about $5.14bn in lost GDP in sub‑Saharan Africa by 2030. African leaders are appealing to the G7, private sector and wealthy individuals to maintain or increase support.
