"Identity spoofing against older adults alone grew by 8x between 2020 and 2024, driven in part by convincing AI impersonations of friends and loved ones. It's a problem costing people in the U.S. nearly half a billion dollars a year with no end in sight."
"Called Quartz, it's a ring that adds friends to your network by literally shaking hands. And from there, it gatekeeps your online communications by proving you're alive, proving you know the person you're talking to, and proving provenance through encrypted channels."
"That quartz is unique to your ring, with geometries that transpose directly to a blockchain certificate tied to your specific jewelry. The ring is also loaded with a vein scanner, which can see beneath your skin to measure your unique blood vessels."
Identity spoofing against older adults increased eightfold between 2020 and 2024, costing Americans nearly half a billion dollars annually through convincing AI impersonations. Design studios Modem and Retinaa developed Quartz, a conceptual ring-based solution addressing this crisis. The ring contains unique quartz geometry linked to a blockchain certificate and incorporates vein scanning technology similar to facial recognition. When users meet, they shake hands to establish encrypted cryptographic keys via NFC technology. These keys authenticate all future communications across platforms. The system verifies three conditions: that you are alive through pulse measurement, that you know the person through the established key, and that communication provenance is encrypted. Failed verification blocks all messages, preventing spoofing attempts.
