WhatsApp identified approximately 200 users in Italy who downloaded a malicious version of its app containing government spyware. The company logged these users out and warned them about the risks associated with unofficial clients. Users were encouraged to uninstall the fake app and download the official version. WhatsApp plans to take legal action against the spyware firm SIO, which has a history of creating malicious apps, including fake versions of WhatsApp and customer support tools.
