Neon, the No. 2 social app on the Apple App Store, pays users to record their phone calls and sells data to AI firms - DataBreaches.Net
"A new app offering to record your phone calls and pay you for the audio so it can sell the data to AI companies is, unbelievably, the No. 2 app in Apple's U.S. App Store's Social Networking section. The app, Neon Mobile, pitches itself as a moneymaking tool offering "hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year" for access to your audio conversations."
"But Neon has gone offline, at least for now, after a security flaw allowed anyone to access the phone numbers, call recordings, and transcripts of any other user, TechCrunch can now report. Kiam told TechCrunch later Thursday that he took down the app's servers and began notifying users about pausing the app, but fell short of informing his users about the security lapse."
Neon Mobile offered users payment to record phone calls and sell the audio to AI companies, promising substantial yearly earnings for access to conversations. The app advertised payments of 30¢ per minute for calls between Neon users and up to $30 per day for calls to non-users, plus referral rewards. Neon climbed App Store rankings quickly, moving from No. 476 on September 18 to the top ten and reaching No. 2 among social apps. A security flaw exposed phone numbers, call recordings, and transcripts, prompting servers to be taken offline and only partial user notifications.
