Not just for classical music lovers, but for everyone: A conversation with Britt Fest Orchestra's new Music Director Norman Huynh * Oregon ArtsWatch
"Huynh was Oregon Symphony's Associate Conductor back when I was living on campus at Portland State University and walking down to hear OSO concerts at the Schnitz a few times a week, and he led two of my favorite concerts of that era, both of them the "live score to film" type of concert where the audience gets to watch a movie up on the screen while the orchestra down on the stage plays the music."
"It was exciting to read of his return to Oregon - last summer as a candidate to succeed Teddy Abrams as music director of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Southern Oregon, and again when he landed the job and started planning this summer's festival. Things got even more exciting when I saw the programming for the festival's six orchestral shows, which included more personal favorites."
"Holst's The Planets. Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. A new commission from Gabriela Lena Frank. And, joy of joys, even more Star Wars - and this time it would be the greatest of the nine movies, featuring the greatest of the nine scores. Yes, that's right: Huynh and BFO are doing The Empire Strikes Back this year."
Norman Huynh previously served as Oregon Symphony’s Associate Conductor and led memorable live score-to-film concerts. He returned to Oregon as a candidate and then as music director of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Southern Oregon. The upcoming festival includes six orchestral shows with major repertoire such as Holst’s The Planets and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The program also features a new commission by Gabriela Lena Frank. Film music remains central, with additional Star Wars programming culminating in a performance of The Empire Strikes Back, pairing the orchestra with the film on screen.
