"I love playing the dog. It is so much fun and so liberating and is a great challenge as an actor. I watched our family dog Mila a lot, and took notes on her body wiggles and her personality. I started noticing all the different dogs that I saw in my life and took small bits from each one. I came up with this mutt of a character."
"With three actors playing dogs, there is plenty of choredography, a term introduced by the choreographer Voni Kengla, who combines a musical-theater dance background with a love of dogs."
"Marv Ross and his wife Rindy are known for Oregon's first platinum band, Quarterflash, and the 1980s mega-hit 'Harden My Heart.' He is a songwriter, musician, producer and playwright. Ross created Marvin's Rescue when he and Rindy adopted a rescue dog during the pandemic."
Marvin's Rescue is a musical comedy written by Marv Ross, featuring three actors playing dogs with choreography designed by Voni Kengla. The production runs March 13-29 at the Ellyn Bye Studio at the Armory, with opening night on March 14. Portland Playhouse partners with triangle productions!, the Oregon Humane Society, and Portland Center Stage. Ticket proceeds benefit the Oregon Humane Society. Special performances include puppy cuddles and audience dog photo displays. Ross created the play after adopting a rescue dog during the pandemic, transforming caregiving challenges into comedy. The production explores relationships, trauma, and humorous situations arising from dog ownership.
