In an effort to reconnect with her teenage son, a mother planned a surprise adventure cruise to Hawaii after he expressed a desire to visit. During the cruise, the built-in community of fellow travelers created a space for both personal connection and independence, allowing her son to see her in a new light. The shared experiences, from kayaking to communal dining, helped bridge the gap of communication, enabling the mother and son to deepen their relationship and enjoy meaningful interactions away from the distractions of everyday life.
One of the best parts of the trip was that it wasn't just us. Our ship, the Safari Explorer, hosted about 30 other travelers. This built-in community meant we didn't drive each other crazy.
Meals were communal style, which took the pressure off having to make conversation one-on-one three times a day. I didn't anticipate how those other passengers would reflect me back to my son in a new light.
