NTIA's Roth addresses remaining BEAD funds
"We appreciate the voluminous and passionate responses to our call for input. Participants and commenters have raised interesting ideas, including funding permitting improvements and workforce-related training, enhancing public safety communications, and using some of the funding to 'clean up' any remaining unserved locations."
"While our guidance was expected by next week, we are taking additional time to review the comments and finalize our approach to ensure these funds are spent as efficiently and responsibly as possible. American taxpayers work hard for their money and deserve nothing less from this Administration."
The NTIA Administrator announced that the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program has generated $21 billion in savings through Benefit of the Bargain reforms. Officials are now deciding how to use these remaining funds based on extensive stakeholder input. Three listening sessions attracted over 1,700 attendees and 175 speakers, while 188 written comments were submitted by industry representatives, state officials, and broadband advocates. Proposed uses for the funds include permitting improvements, workforce training, public safety communications enhancements, and addressing remaining unserved locations. The NTIA is delaying guidance release to thoroughly review comments and ensure responsible fund allocation. However, a Trump administration executive order may complicate additional BEAD funding by requiring states to cede artificial intelligence policy control.
