The withdrawal of USAid funding will significantly impact the Hope Through Action project, managed by the Jane Goodall Institute, which aims to protect chimpanzees in Tanzania. Launched in November 2023, the project sought to conserve biodiversity through community engagement. With chimpanzee populations dropping drastically, the project's loss follows systematic cuts initiated during Donald Trump's administration. While Ecoisa's limited funding offers some support, it cannot replace the lost financial commitment needed for significant conservation efforts. Activists like Jane Goodall stress the importance of integrating local communities in wildlife conservation.
According to JGI figures, chimpanzees have become extinct in three African countries, and overall population numbers have fallen from millions to below 340,000.
Now it has emerged that the agency will withdraw from the Hope Through Action project managed by the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI).
In collaboration with JGI Austria, Ecosia has offered $100,000 over the next three years to further TGI Tanzania's Gombe reforestation project.
Diana Leizinger stated, 'We refuse to abandon people and nature. Where hope could have been destroyed, we are helping it grow again.'
