"Once projected as the franchise shortstop of the future, he owns a .662 OPS over his three years in the majors, and his defense regressed significantly last season to the tune of a league-leading 19 errors. Caballero was batting .259 with a .720 OPS, four home runs, 13 RBI, and 13 steals this season."
Anthony Volpe rejoined the New York Yankees one week after a demotion to Triple-A following offseason shoulder surgery rehab. Jose Caballero was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger fracture after injuring it while diving back into first base against the Milwaukee Brewers. An MRI was conducted to determine the injury’s full extent. Volpe is expected to keep the shortstop spot warm while Caballero is out, with no indication of a position change. Volpe previously showed limited offensive production, posting a .662 OPS over three major league seasons, while his defense declined last season with 19 league-leading errors. Caballero had a .259 batting average, .720 OPS, four home runs, 13 RBI, and 13 steals. Max Schuemann started at shortstop in the interim against the Orioles.
