In a Fox News interview, Mamdani emphasized peace between Israel and Palestine and initially declined to express opinions about Hamas's future beyond law, justice, and safety. Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen called him 'Pro-Hamas Zohran' and said he is unfit for U.S. office. In a subsequent mayoral debate, Mamdani stated he believes Hamas should lay down their arms. Mamdani describes himself as a Democratic Socialist.
