Monday's Headlines: Permanent Paseo Edition - Streetsblog New York City
""People used this road as a speedway to get to somewhere else,""
""This park was born of trauma,""
""There has been a 70-percent reduction in crashes - that is life-saving,""
""That means our children can be out safely, can learn to ride their bike, can gather in the park. Older adults can enjoy the open space. All of us have an opportunity to live and thrive with safety and in health.""
Paseo Park is the co-named, car-light stretch of 34th Avenue between 69th Street and Junction Boulevard, now transitioning into a permanent configuration with plaza blocks and car-free features. The Department of Transportation applied the Paseo Park name during the transition. The permanent design resulted from years of volunteer work that established daily barricades and advocated for lasting changes. Before the pandemic the roadway functioned as a speedway. Pandemic-era needs prompted the conversion to open, car-free spaces for exercise and socially distanced gathering. The redesign produced a 70 percent reduction in crashes, improving safety for children and older adults.
