"To kids across New York City, you have a very serious mission if you choose to accept. Stay cozy,"
"We believe there is a unique set of extenuating circumstances for tomorrow's education,"
"We shared this with the state education commissioner this morning, and she has granted us a waiver, for which we are incredibly thankful."
"Stay indoors at the height of the storm. Once that has passed, feel free to go out and sled."
New York City public schools will be closed Monday as a nor'easter threatens the five boroughs with 16 to 24 inches of snow. The storm will begin with a wintry mix and light rain then intensify, with the heaviest snow Sunday night into midday Monday. Monday was scheduled as the first day back from midwinter break, so students receive an extra day off and no make-up days will be added. A state waiver was granted because of extenuating circumstances. Schools could not pivot to remote learning because devices were not sent home before winter break. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during the height of the storm and follow cold-weather safety guidance afterward.
