Con Ed blames salt spread after thousands lose power in Brooklyn
"These conditions are why portions of certain neighborhoods are experiencing outages, and why restorations have taken longer than anticipated,"
"Our crews will remain on site and continue repairs until every customer is restored."
Thousands of Brooklyn residents experienced power outages after heavy snowfall, with about 2,000 Con Ed customers still without power in Boerum Hill, Park Slope and Gowanus and nearly 300 in Bedford-Stuyvesant earlier. Buried power lines initially prevented outages during the storm, but city crews spread 116 million pounds of salt that mixed with meltwater and seeped into underground cable systems. Salt-laden water caused corrosion, electrical shorts and insulation damage to distribution cables. Iced-over snow and piled-up drifts are hindering crew access, prolonging repairs. Crews remain on site and continue working until service is restored to all affected customers.
