How a random NFL drug test helped discover cancer, potentially save Alex Singleton's life
""Cancer ... the word still freaks me out a little bit," Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton said. "And then you hear it ... and your mind just goes.""
""You do hear the word cancer, it is shocking, so shocking," Sam Singleton said. "... You go from not even thinking about something like that, living and working and everything in your day, and then you're listening to [doctors] tell you about cancer.""
Alex Singleton was informed on Nov. 3 that he almost certainly had testicular cancer after a random NFL drug test detected an abnormally high hCG hormone level. He and his wife, Sam, listened as doctors explained the diagnosis and scheduled surgery for Nov. 7. Sam described the shock of hearing the word cancer and the abrupt shift from daily routine to medical consultations. Singleton returned to play in his fourth season with the Denver Broncos, leads the team with 124 tackles, will start on Christmas night against the Kansas City Chiefs, and is now a cancer survivor.
