Rev. Al Sharpton advised former Gov. Andrew Cuomo to abandon his independent mayoral bid in New York City during an MSNBC interview. Sharpton highlighted that it would be beneficial for both Cuomo and the citizens of New York, emphasizing that Cuomo should allow a direct competition between Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani and sitting Mayor Eric Adams. Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani, is still considering maintaining his name on the ballot for the November general election.
Sharpton emphasized that it would be in Cuomo's best interest to withdraw from the race, stating, "in the best interest of the legacy of Andrew Cuomo, that he ought to let them have the one-on-one race." He suggested Cuomo could still endorse a candidate without participating as a competitor, which might serve to benefit New Yorkers.
Cuomo was noted to be appearing on the November ballot as an independent candidate despite losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani. A spokesperson for Cuomo remarked, "Everyone is entitled to their own political opinion... Most New Yorkers are not Trumpers, and most New Yorkers are not socialists - the majority lies in the middle."
