Andrew Cuomo is contemplating an independent run for the November election after his defeat in the Democratic mayoral primary by Zohran Mamdani. High-profile supporters are urging Cuomo to withdraw, with hedge-fund billionaire Bill Ackman expressing confidence in Eric Adams' campaign. Ackman recommended Cuomo to step back to enhance Adams' chances, citing Cuomo's lack of energy and proposals. Reverend Al Sharpton also suggested Cuomo endorse either candidate and allow them to compete in a one-on-one race, emphasizing the need for Cuomo to consider his legacy.
In short, my takeaway is that Adams can win the upcoming election and that the Governor should step aside to maximize Adams' probability of success.
It was abundantly clear in his body language, his subdued energy and his proposals to beat Mamdani, that he is not up for the fight.
I think, in the best interest of the legacy of Andrew Cuomo, that he ought to let them have the one-on-one race.
Ackman acknowledged that Adams's first term has not been without flaws, primarily due to him hiring too many friends for City Hall.
