Tom Morello, the famed guitarist known for his activism, filmed a music video in Boyle Heights to shine light on the ongoing ICE raids affecting local immigrant families. He aimed to highlight the emotional impact of these raids, encouraging local kids and families to express their truths. Morello, headlining a benefit concert soon after, expressed the need for resistance through joy amidst a climate of fear. For decades, Morello has been an advocate for immigrant rights, merging his music with social activism to foster community solidarity.
"You are witnesses to the crimes being committed against immigrants in L.A.," he said, asking them for straight-ahead, fearless expressions while he played guitar and sang beside them.
"I wanted to humanize the terrible ICE sweeps that are going on now. We are in really, really dangerous times," said Morello, the longtime guitarist for the leftist rock group Rage Against the Machine.
"I think that Saturday's ['No Kings'] protests showed that every act of joy is an act of resistance in this time," he continued.
"You saw thousands of people on the streets celebrating resistance and saying that 'You picked the wrong city to try to occupy.'"
