Gay man fights husband's "dehumanizing" & "barbaric" detention by ICE - LGBTQ Nation
"At every step, it feels designed to be as insular, as cruel, and as impenetrable as possible. At every turn, we're seeing a new kind of cruelty."
"I looked over at my husband when she asked how we met - just instinct. He's the love of my life. She snapped her fingers in my face and said, 'Don't look at him.' We're telling our love story, and I'm not even allowed to look at my husband."
"And that's by design. An elaborate internment apparatus that is by turns arbitrary, dehumanizing, and barbaric."
Allan and Matthew Marrero, a married same-sex couple, experienced a traumatic immigration process when Allan sought a green card. During his scheduled interview at Federal Plaza in New York City, the couple encountered systematic cruelty and arbitrary procedures. They arrived without passports despite bringing extensive documentation, which the officer dismissed. During the interview, Matthew was prohibited from looking at his husband while discussing their relationship. The couple was subsequently questioned about a missed immigration hearing from three years prior when Allan was in rehab. Advocates describe the ICE detention system as deliberately designed to be dehumanizing, barbaric, and impenetrable, with cruelty embedded at every procedural step.
