Shyyell Diamond Sanchez-McCray, a 42-year-old Black transgender woman, was shot and killed in Petersburg, Virginia. Police found her with multiple gunshot wounds inside a home. She is recognized as the first known trans person to die from violence in the US in 2026. Sanchez-McCray was a prominent figure in her community, known for her drag performances and advocacy against racism in LGBTQ+ spaces. Friends and family remember her for her generosity and commitment to uplifting others. A funeral service is scheduled for March 27 in Petersburg.
