Coach: Ruffy-Silva Feud Not First 'Internal Disagreement' at Fighting Nerds
"A black belt in jiu-jitsu with over 60 Vale Tudo fights and one of the main figures responsible for grappling training on the team, Álvaro assures that he wasn't upset by Ruffy's statement saying that training with Volkanovski made him realize he knew nothing about grappling. "Ruffy hadn't shown up for grappling training at The Fighting Nerds for a long time," Alvaro said."
""During my career as a professional fighter I trained with some of the biggest Brazilian teams like Chute Boxe, BTT, 011. All those teams were like great families. What most people don't understand is that Fighting Nerds is not a great family. Fighting Nerd is a cluster of families," Alvaro said. "[Caio] Borralho has his team. Ruffy [has]his, actually he trains grappling with master Pardal. Prates [has] his. Actually, Jean and Ruffy haven't trained together for a long time.""
After three weeks in Las Vegas helping Jean Silva and Bruna Brasil in UFC fights, Flavio and Álvaro returned to São Paulo and addressed the conflict between Silva and Mauricio Ruffy. Álvaro, a jiu-jitsu black belt with over sixty Vale Tudo fights and a lead grappling coach, said he was not upset by Ruffy's comment that training with Volkanovski revealed gaps in his grappling. Álvaro noted Ruffy long prioritized striking and rarely attended grappling sessions, and that training in Australia motivated him to work on grappling. Álvaro explained Fighting Nerds operates as a cluster of sub-teams whose members sometimes do not train together, but the fighters will remain under the same Fighting Nerds umbrella despite the public disagreement.
