They reportedly tried to enter Pokrovsk on light vehicles, but were pushed back. Ukraine's military said some 300 Russian soldiers were now in Pokrovsk, and are trying to reach the northern parts and encircle the remaining troops defending the town."
"Russia has been trying to take Pokrovsk for more than a year, as the city is at a strategically important crossroads and would provide Russian forces a base of operations to push deeper into Donetsk. It has been largely been destroyed. If the city falls, it would amount to a major victory for Russia, similar to the fall of Avdiivka in February 2024."
Pokrovsk remains in Ukrainian hands while Russian troops push into the former rail hub, mounting attempted light-vehicle assaults that were repelled. Approximately 300 Russian soldiers are now in Pokrovsk and are trying to reach northern parts to encircle remaining defenders. Pokrovsk has been a Russian objective for more than a year because of its strategic crossroads and potential as a base to push deeper into Donetsk, and the city has been largely destroyed. Its fall would be a major Russian victory comparable to Avdiivka in February 2024. Russian forces also claim control of eastern Kupiansk in Kharkiv region.
