Rescuers work to reach worker trapped in medieval tower that partially collapsed in Rome
"It will be a very long operation. We must try to save this person while mitigating the enormous risks to the people who are trying to save him,"
"signs of life"
"very complex"
A medieval tower in Rome partially collapsed during renovation, trapping at least one worker beneath rubble and critically injuring another who was hospitalized. Firefighters attempted rescues through a first-floor window but retreated as the structure continued to give way, aborting multiple ladder approaches and deploying a drone. Crews later used a crane and giant tubes to suction rubble from an upper window. Three workers were rescued unharmed after the initial midday collapse. Hundreds of tourists watched as another partial collapse sent debris down during an early rescue attempt. The operation is expected to be long and highly risky.
