Nordic capital cities top Europe's cleanest air rankings

A recent study by the European Environment Agency ranked Nordic capitals as having the cleanest air among European capitals. Stockholm is at the top, followed by Reykjavik and Helsinki. Tallin, Estonia's capital, is fourth, with Copenhagen in fifth place. Oslo ranks seventh. Athens has the worst air quality, with Bucharest, Nicosia, and Zagreb following. The top twenty cities for air quality are primarily in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, led by Oulu in Finland. Rankings are based on health risks from air pollutants over the last two years.
According to the European Environment Agency, Stockholm has the cleanest air of all European capitals, with Nordic capitals dominating the top rankings. Reykjavik and Helsinki follow in second and third places, respectively.
Cities were ranked based on the risk of mortality associated with long-term exposure to fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone over the past two calendar years.
At the bottom end of the table, Athens has the worst air quality among European capitals, followed by Bucharest, Nicosia, and Zagreb, with Madrid and Rome also ranking low.
In the broader ranking of all European cities, Nordic countries dominated the top spots, with Finland's Oulu ranked first, and several Swedish cities in the top ten.
