"Moscow is struggling to back up claims it has seized Kupiansk and Pokrovsk, and to deny a submarine was struck in Novorossiysk. Ukrainian military successes and Russian narratives clashed this week, as Moscow's assertion of inevitable victory flew in the face of facts on the ground. Ukraine steadily took back control of almost all of its northern city of Kupiansk after isolating Russian forces within it, belying Russian claims to have seized it."
"Geolocated footage showed Ukrainian forces advancing in the city the following day and taking back the southern suburb of Yuvileynyi, pushing Russian troops to the northern and western suburbs. The Russian position had become more precarious by Monday. Ukrainian forces said they prevented reinforcements from entering the city through a gas pipeline, a tactic Russia had used in the siege of Chasiv Yar, and the isolated Russian troops were being supplied solely by drone."
Ukrainian forces isolated Russian units in Kupiansk, cut logistics lines, surrounded about 200 troops, cleared forests north of the city, and reclaimed the southern suburb of Yuvileynyi. Ukrainian units pushed Russian troops into northern and western suburbs and prevented reinforcements entering via a gas pipeline, forcing isolated Russian units to rely on drone resupply. Ukrainian forces reported continued repulsion of Russian attacks while Russia's Ministry of Defence asserted control and claimed Zapad Group units held all districts. Ukrainian defenders also held Pokrovsk despite Russian assertions of total control. Visual evidence suggested an underwater unmanned vehicle severely damaged a Kilo-class submarine despite Moscow's denials.
