First German politician enters Gaza since October 7 attack
""It cannot become a lasting barrier," Klockner said."
""transparent picture of the situation strengthens trust.""
Julia Klockner became the first German politician to set foot in the Gaza Strip since the Oct 7, 2023 attacks. She spent around an hour in Gaza within the area controlled by Israel's military during a three-day trip. Journalists were not permitted to accompany her on the Bundestag speaker's embed with the Israel Defense Forces. Klockner met relatives of those killed at the Nova Music Festival at the memorial. She welcomed Israel's decision to allow a German parliamentary observer and urged continued opening of the territory after the ceasefire. She said the Yellow Line was a temporary demarcation: "It cannot become a lasting barrier." She appealed for access for international and independent observers, saying a "transparent picture of the situation strengthens trust." She also visited Yad Vashem and addressed Israel's parliament.
