""While I was lying on the ground offering no resistance, a member of the police force hit me on the head from behind with a service baton,""
""As a result, I suffered serious injuries to my head and mouth as well as minor injuries to my chin, hands, and knees,""
""The entire state system has been directed against its own citizens,""
""beat us because they are afraid of us.""
Thousands of protesters led by students marched in Belgrade on September 8 demanding Serbian authorities punish police officers for violence against demonstrators during recent anti-government protests. Protesters chanted against President Aleksandar Vucic for refusing to call snap parliamentary elections and expressed anger over alleged police brutality. Student Aleksandra Nikolic described being hit on the head from behind with a baton and sustaining serious head and mouth injuries plus minor injuries to chin, hands, and knees. Student Nikolina Sindjelic said she and others were beaten, accused state media of trying to "justify violence with lies," and said she was sexually harassed after detention. Protesters reported use of tear gas and rubber bullets, splashed red paint outside a police unit, and chanted "He is Finished." Authorities have increased a crackdown after a deadly Novi Sad roof collapse; police deny wrongdoing and say they acted lawfully.
