"Let's face it, when it comes to the press and its place in a healthy democracy, this has been a horrible year. Aside from the continuing economic challenges facing media organizations, we have an administration that is doing all it can to muzzle the media. We, of course, cover that every day in this newsletter, and we will continue to do so. But today, we try to remain positive and express our sincere gratitude."
"As a Chicagoan, I've been thankful for local media outlets that are going above and beyond to cover the federal immigration enforcement in our city and the surrounding suburbs. The coverage has been thorough, varied, informative and emotional, and holds the government to account. Journalists have risked their safety to bring us these stories, and I am grateful to them for the public service they're providing."
The press faced severe challenges in 2025, including economic pressures and governmental efforts to muzzle the media. Local newsrooms produced thorough, varied, informative, and emotional reporting on federal immigration enforcement, especially in Chicago and other U.S. communities. Reporters worked in smaller newsrooms and often dangerous situations to document how national policy affected local communities. That reporting held those in power accountable, preserved the historical record, and provided essential public service. Despite a difficult year for the industry, gratitude is expressed for journalists' commitment, courage, and the role of local outlets in sustaining democracy.
