"CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss poached ABC News reporter Matt Gutman on Friday, months after his on-air comments about Charlie Kirk's alleged assassin triggered backlash from many on the right. Weiss was previously rumored to be eying Gutman for the role of CBS Evening News anchor. The storied show's two co-anchors Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson both announced their resignations in recent months."
"Gutman's hiring comes just months after his comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk's alleged killer drew criticism for being overly sympathetic. Reporting on the messages suspected assassin Tyler Robinson allegedly sent to his roommate and partner following Kirk's assassination, Gutman described the texts as very touching in a way that many of us didn't expect. He went on to call the exchange a very intimate portrait into this relationship that he said highlighted the duality of Robinson."
Bari Weiss, appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News after Paramount acquired The Free Press, recruited ABC News chief national correspondent Matt Gutman to join CBS as a high-ranking correspondent. Gutman will leave his ABC role and will not chair the CBS Evening News, according to sources. CBS Evening News recently lost co-anchors Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. Weiss pursued Gutman early in her tenure and continued negotiations after his initial inclination to remain at ABC. Gutman's hiring followed backlash over his on-air description of texts attributed to the suspect in Charlie Kirk's killing, for which he later apologized.
