(Not so) scary Google updates: is it time to purge the dead content on your website?
"In August and September 2022, Google rolled out two major updates to its core search algorithms. First, there was the Helpful Content Update, which was completed on September 9, followed by the routine September Core Update. It can be a spine-chilling moment when Google introduces an update outside of the routine, causing ghoulish screams amongst digital marketers (OK, maybe not quite that bad) who are concerned about what might happen to the performance of their websites."
"Is there zombie content lurking on your site? Web pages with no SERP impressions, clicks or traffic are often referred to as 'dead content' since they seemingly have no life in them, although a more accurate term might be 'zombie content,' because the page is technically still alive, and search engines could therefore bump into it during a (presumably late-night) crawl. If Google finds this content and classifies it as 'unhelpful,' it will take this into account when ranking your other high-quality, helpful content too."
Google rolled out two major updates in August and September 2022: the Helpful Content Update and the September Core Update. The Helpful Content Update generates a site-wide signal so unhelpful pages can negatively affect rankings across the entire site. Pages with no impressions, clicks or traffic are 'dead' or 'zombie' content, technically still indexed but offering little value. If Google classifies such pages as unhelpful, that classification can drag down otherwise high-quality content performance in SERPs. Removing, consolidating, or improving low-performing pages can restore site quality and help valuable pages rank better.
