What you need to know about Saturday's protests
"The Unite the Kingdom march is the second rally of its kind organised by the anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson, who says it is a demonstration for "national unity, free speech and Christian values". It will start on Kingsway and proceed to Aldwych, Strand, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, ending in Parliament Square. The speeches and music are to conclude by 17:30, and the assembly must end by 18:00."
Two major protests are planned for Saturday in central London, with the Metropolitan Police expecting one of its busiest days in recent years. The annual pro-Palestine “Nakba Day” march will travel to a rally at Waterloo Place, marking the 78th anniversary of the 1948 displacement of Palestinians. A separate “Unite the Kingdom” march organized by Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson, will gather at Parliament Square. Public Order Act conditions will apply to both marches, and live facial recognition will be used for the first time as part of protest policing. The operation is expected to cost about £4.5 million and will run alongside the FA Cup Final at Wembley under a severe terrorism threat level. Police plan to keep the two crowds apart using hard cordons and rolling closures, with east-west corridors for most of the afternoon.
