Hillingdon has emerged as the London borough disposing of the most DVDs, CDs, and VHS tapes, discarding 191 tonnes in the first quarter of 2024, ranking fourth in the UK. Other boroughs like Wandsworth and Lambeth also show significant media disposal rates, indicating a widespread trend in London. Experts attribute this decline to the rising popularity of streaming services, a rise in decluttering habits post-pandemic, and a generational shift that favors digital formats over physical media collections. Colin Hayes from AWM emphasizes the nostalgic loss of physical media as it disappears from homes.
According to the latest Waste Data Flow statistics, 191 tonnes of DVDs, CDs, and video tapes were discarded across the borough in the first three months of 2024.
Colin Hayes from AWM remarked, 'Nearly 200 tonnes in just one borough is remarkable, that's thousands of shelves being cleared and wardrobes emptied at a staggering rate.'
The trend in media disposal reflects the convenience of on-demand streaming services and a generational shift away from physical collections.
Hayes noted, 'We're not just streaming more, we're physically saying goodbye to a whole era of how we watched, listened and collected.'
