Fury in Greenwich as residents protest council's Stalinist' parking proposals
"I have been living in the Greenwich borough for 60 years. I have never felt so humiliated and just driven to destruction. I'm not living at the moment. I am just fighting this."
"I have tried to do my rounds in the community on public transport before, but it took an extra three-and-a-half hours, she said."
"Greenwich Council are bringing us all down to our knees and we"
Angry residents gathered outside Woolwich Town Hall and during a Full Council meeting to protest Sustainable Streets proposals that would introduce controlled parking zones across large areas of Greenwich. Protesters labelled the plans Stalinist and criminal and accused the cash-strapped council of seeking revenue after the council predicted a £45.1m budget gap. A Charlton carer said she would have to give up caring if unable to drive and reported that using public transport added three-and-a-half hours to her rounds. A councillor condemned dishonest discourse and stated that any money generated would be ringfenced for transport in the borough.
