New Plans Are Calling for Part of Regent Street to Be Pedestrianised
Briefly

Plans have been proposed for creating a traffic-free Regent Street St James's and enlarging pedestrian space at Piccadilly Circus. Safer cycling routes and improved pedestrian crossings are part of the proposal. The masterplan aims to connect green spaces, enhancing accessibility and the environment in this area. Westminster Council emphasizes the lasting benefits of these changes for both the community and businesses. Public feedback is invited on these plans before final decisions are made in 2026.
The proposals include making Regent Street St James's traffic-free and enlarging the pedestrian space at Piccadilly Circus. The introduction of safer cycling routes on the main section of Regent Street and two-way traffic on Haymarket, plus the improvement of pedestrian crossings on Regent Street and the removal of the road's central island have also been presented.
Westminster's cabinet member for planning & economic development, Councillor Geoff Barraclough, stated, "By removing traffic from Regent Street St James's and expanding pedestrian space at Piccadilly Circus, we're creating a new network of public spaces that will serve Londoners for generations."
This is a rare opportunity to reimagine the heart of the West End as a greener, more welcoming and accessible place that works better for residents, visitors and local businesses.
