Jim Clyburn defies generational revolt, seeks another term in Congress at 85 years old
"In a few minutes, I'm going to sign the paperwork that's necessary in order to qualify for the Democratic nomination to run again."
"First elected to Congress in 1992, Clyburn is considered the preeminent Democrat in South Carolina and one of the most prominent Black political leaders nationwide. He served as Pelosi's third-in-command - variably as majority whip, assistant minority leader and Democratic caucus chair - for over a decade and a half from 2007 to 2023."
Rep. James Clyburn, 88, has announced his candidacy for reelection to Congress, joining Reps. Hal Rogers and Maxine Waters as the only members older than him still running. While nearly a dozen House Democrats in their 70s and 80s are retiring at the end of the 119th Congress, dozens of others remain committed to reelection despite facing well-funded primary challenges. Clyburn, first elected in 1992, is a prominent Democratic leader in South Carolina and a significant Black political figure nationally. He held senior leadership positions under Nancy Pelosi for over 15 years, serving as majority whip, assistant minority leader, and Democratic caucus chair, and continued as assistant leader under Hakeem Jeffries.
