"San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor took to social media to excoriate bystanders recording police encounters and law-enforcement critics following a Wednesday crime spree where an armed carjacking suspect led a police chase that spurred two gunfights in Hollister and a shootout in San Jose that left the suspect dead and a police officer grazed in the head by a bullet."
"One of the main reasons that cops flock to communities and stay there is directly tied to the amount of support that community gives them. I'm not sure how many of you were almost murdered at work yesterday. But I know one of my guys was, Taylor said. We all get that in this job, we have to have thick skin."
An armed carjacking suspect, Mohamed Husien, led a police chase that triggered two gunfights in Hollister and a later shootout in San Jose that left the suspect dead and grazed a police officer in the head. Deputies and Hollister officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect in separate encounters with no injuries in Hollister. The county sheriff posted on Facebook admonishing bystanders who filmed and entered active crime scenes, saying their proximity created additional safety hazards and diverted deputies' attention. The sheriff also blamed hostile social-media commentary for complicating recruitment and retention in local law enforcement.
