Trans teen athlete speaks out amid backlash: 'I'm just a normal kid'
"They swear I'm this crazy danger to society. I'm just a normal kid going to school, playing sports."
"I'm just a normal kid"
"People just see one thing and they're like, 'Oh, that's what you are'. They don't take the time to get to know me. So, it's just a little frustrating."
"I'm grateful, thankful. As a mom, it means a lot. Those girls mean a lot because I know it helps AB get through hard times."
AB Hernandez, a transgender student at Jurupa Valley High School, has competed on the girls' volleyball and track-and-field teams while facing protests and three opposing teams forfeiting rather than play her. Hernandez said she is "just a normal kid" and described critics as portraying her as a danger while she attends school and plays sports. Conservative pundits and former President Donald Trump criticized her participation and claimed she had an unfair advantage. The president threatened to withhold "large-scale" funding for Californian schools under an executive order opposing male competitive participation in women's sports on safety, fairness, dignity and truth grounds. Hernandez expressed frustration that people judge her without getting to know her. After Chaffey High School agreed to compete against Hernandez, her mother expressed gratitude and said those girls help AB through hard times.
