New campaign calls for cameras to monitor Rainbow Flag at Stonewall National Monument | amNewYork
"The National Park Service, which is part of the Department of the Interior, told Gay City News at the time that the flag was removed to align with guidance dictating that only the US flag and other congressionally or departmentally authorized flags can be flown on National Park Service-led flagpoles. I wish we had a camera last Monday when you first reported the flag had been removed, Petrelis, a New Jersey native who lives in San Francisco, told Gay City News in a phone interview on Feb. 20."
"In response to the campaign, The Monster, a queer bar near Christopher Park at 80 Grove St., confirmed to Gay City News on Feb. 20 that one of the bar's existing cameras was slightly repositioned to capture more of the Stonewall National Monument, which is what the bar tends to do during Pride Month when there is greater activity in the area."
Michael Petrelis, who helped bring a Rainbow Flag to Stonewall National Monument, launched a campaign urging community members to install cameras around Christopher Park to document any federal removal of the flag. The action followed the flag's sudden removal on Feb. 9. The National Park Service, part of the Department of the Interior, said the flag was removed to align with guidance allowing only the US flag and congressionally or departmentally authorized flags on NPS-led flagpoles. A nearby queer bar, The Monster, repositioned a camera to capture more of the monument and provided footage.
