Dame Kelly Holmes revealed that her experience with Covid significantly impacted her decision to publicly come out as a lesbian. During a podcast interview, she reflected on her past, acknowledging her first realization of her sexual orientation back in 1988 while in the military, where fear of prosecution kept her silent. After contracting Covid, which she described as traumatic, she sought psychological help and reached a point where she felt it was time to disclose her truth, marking a transformative moment in her life.
"Covid became quite traumatic... I was internalising those thoughts of 'I don't want to live my life like this'," Holmes shared on the podcast.
"I needed to explain why I couldn't come out because of the army, because a lot of people didn't know about the army ban... nobody knew that was actually the underlying reason for not coming out."
