""[The card] belittles the identity of trans and non-binary people.... Cis people saying they identity as something like a tomato, attack helicopter, or a Grinch I feel invalidates the lived experience of trans people. It tells the world that they think it's a choice to be trans, something you can switch in and out of, like playing dress up. This is not true.""
""Trans people don't choose to identify as their gender - it's part of who they are," she added. "Being trans or nonbinary is not something you can switch off, in the same way a cis person can't switch off being cis.""
""This Christmas, I'm identifying as a Grinch.""
A U.K. greeting card illustrator and publisher produced a Christmas card depicting the Grinch with the caption, "This Christmas, I'm identifying as a Grinch." A trans journalist discovered the card in a Sainsbury store, photographed it, and shared the find on social media. The card prompted criticism for belittling trans and non-binary identities and suggesting gender is a choice. The greeting card producer apologized and destroyed all copies. GLAAD guidance advises avoiding phrasing that frames trans people as "identifying as" a gender because transgender people are their gender the same as cisgender people.
