"“We both come from religious upbringings. It's been a big part of deconstruction and healing for us,” Melody told LGBTQ Nation. “When we passed the protesters, there was this evil hatred that was palpable.”"
"“It's our favorite. It's a great reminder that Pride started with a riot and continues to exist because of the continued attacks on our community.”"
"“So they pulled over for a kiss.” “Instinctively, I grabbed his hand and got close to him, where I instantly melted. A friend took the pic, and I felt like our love burst the cloud of ugliness they were trying to evoke.”"
"“We were introduced by a mutual friend. I thought he was a cis man and questioned him as to why he was there. Lesson to me to not assume or judge someone, especially in an inclusive space where everyone who is respectful is welcome.”"
Melody and Roman Velaruz carried a 50-foot banner in the San Diego Pride parade and encountered religious protesters. They described the protesters’ presence as palpable hatred and said Pride continues because of ongoing attacks on their community. After joining the Stonewall Rally the night before, they were prepared to respond. They stopped to kiss, and they felt their love countered the ugliness they perceived. The couple met at a local lesbian bar and were introduced by a mutual friend. Melody said she learned not to assume or judge someone in an inclusive space. Roman initially wanted to pass and stay low, but Melody insisted on openly sharing queerness, leading to growing tension and change in how they navigated identity.
