Walnut Creek speaker: Education 'most powerful' crime fighting tool
"Education is the most powerful tool to fighting crime, "If I can explain to you how the scam works, and you understand the scam, then you will not fall victim to that scam.""
""The world is changing all the time, and technology is getting better," "Technology breeds crime. It always has and always will. And there will always be people who are willing to use technology in a negative, self-serving way.""
Frank Abagnale returned to the Newsmakers: Lesher Speaker Series at the Lesher Center for the Arts on Sept. 30 to educate attendees about cybercrime, forgery, and scams. Prevention, verification, and education were emphasized as the best methods to protect privacy and avoid becoming a victim of cyberfraud. Abagnale highlighted that technology continuously advances and breeds crime, and that many cyberattacks take roughly 280 days to trace while fewer than 0.05% are prosecuted. The event featured Contra Costa Senior Legal Services to spotlight elder protection. Abagnale drew on decades of experience consulting with the FBI and thousands of institutions.
