"UC Berkeley has agreed to pay $60,000 to Israeli sociologist Yael Nativ, who says she was not rehired because of her Israeli identity during Gaza protests in 2022, despite her class's popularity. Chancellor Rich Lyons on Wednesday issued an apology to Yael Nativ, a visiting professor who was found in a campus investigation to have been the victim of discrimination, the Los Angeles Times reported. She is also invited to teach her class in a semester of her choosing."
"I respect and appreciate Dr. Nativ's decision to settle this case, Lyons said in a statement. She is owed the apology I will provide on behalf of our campus. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Nativ back to Berkeley to teach again. Nativ sued in state court this year after asking the university to follow up on the campus report by rehiring her and taking actions to prevent similar future incidents."
UC Berkeley agreed to pay $60,000 to Israeli sociologist Yael Nativ and issued an apology after a campus investigation found she faced discrimination. Nativ says she was not rehired because of her Israeli identity during Gaza protests in 2022 despite her class's popularity; she was invited to teach in a semester of her choosing. Nativ sued in state court seeking rehiring and measures to prevent similar incidents, calling the university's response to her antisemitism complaints inadequate. A department chair told her via WhatsApp that tensions and angry graduate students would make teaching her a 'terrible position.' The case fits broader allegations of bias against Jews and Muslims at colleges nationwide, and Berkeley also suspended a lecturer for alleged pro‑Palestinian advocacy.
