
Turkey revoked the operating licence of Istanbul Bilgi University through a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette. The closure became effective immediately and relied on a law permitting closure of an independent school when expected education and training levels are insufficient. The university had about 20,000 students in Turkey and abroad. The institution had been seized by the state in a criminal investigation involving its parent company, Can Holdings, over alleged money laundering and tax fraud. Since the seizure, a court-appointed administrator ran the university. Turkey’s Council of Higher Education promised measures to ensure students would not be harmed and reported that students would continue at Mimar Sin University. Protests occurred at the campus, and a law professor described the shutdown as overnight.
