January is traditionally the busiest time for gym membership sales in NYC. NYC Parks offers an extensive, free adult fitness program called Shape Up NYC that includes aerobic and strength training classes such as dance fitness, bootcamp, and bodyweight circuit training. In 2025 more than 40,000 New Yorkers participated in Shape Up NYC. Zumba was the program's most-attended class in 2025, offering high-energy cardio dance workouts with widely appealing, global and Latin American pop music. Al Oerter Recreation Center hosted about 2,650 Zumba visits and Manhattan's Highbridge Park hosted about 1,300, with outdoor classes creating a low-pressure, social exercise environment.
