Sexual abstinence is BAD for men: Regular sex boosts sperm quality
"'Because sperm are highly mobile and have minimal cytoplasm, they quickly exhaust their stored energy reserves and have limited capacity for repair,' co-lead author Dr Rebecca Dean, from the University of Oxford, said."
"'Ejaculates should be viewed as populations of individual sperm which undergo birth, death, ageing and selective mortality,' lead author Dr Krish Sanghvi said."
Regular sexual activity is linked to higher quality sperm with less DNA damage. Sperm stored in the testes deteriorates over time, regardless of male age. Abstaining from ejaculation increases DNA damage, oxidative stress, and reduces sperm mobility and viability, leading to lower fertilization success rates. The study analyzed 115 human studies and 56 studies across various species, suggesting that current WHO guidelines on abstinence before semen sampling may need revision to improve IVF outcomes.
