"Having more hasslers is associated with accelerated biological aging. A higher number of hasslers, of people who cause you stress, was observed in study participants that also exhibited accelerated biological aging. Each one of them was associated with an increase in the aging process by an average 1.5%."
"Having to spend time with hasslers comes with effects equivalent to traditional stressors like money problems or workplace stress. These stressors contribute to a higher risk for cardiovascular and other diseases, reduced immune function and increased inflammation in the body."
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that people who regularly interact with individuals who cause stress—termed "hasslers"—experience accelerated biological aging. The research identified a cumulative effect where each stressful person in someone's life is associated with an average 1.5% increase in the aging process annually. Over a decade, this translates to nearly two extra months of biological aging per hassler. The stress from these relationships produces effects similar to traditional stressors like financial problems or workplace pressure, contributing to higher cardiovascular disease risk, reduced immune function, and increased inflammation. While healthy social relationships benefit overall health, the quality and nature of interpersonal interactions significantly impact biological aging rates.
